The Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Foundation was created by the Police Act 2000 for the purpose of "marking the sacrifices and honouring the achievements of the Royal Ulster Constabulary" The memorial garden portrays a journey, with focal points of interest along the way.

Mourne Granite where selected to supply the granite in the garden by Peter Hutchinson Landscape Architect and Cecil A Haffey the main contractor. Due to the design lead nature of the contract, Suzanne McDowell of Mourne Granite worked closely with the creative team in the specification of the stone products used in the garden. Many of the products were made as scale models to allow the details to be refined.

A sweeping paved pathway in contrasting grey and gold granite with a combination of colour and texture added subtitle detail to a hard landscaping product. The walkway is punctuated with granite and steel summer seats to allow reflection.

The Area Of Peace houses the bays of formal paving set out in decades, which display the polished black granite plaques bearing the names of those who lost there lives in the line of duty solid granite seats frame each level. The polished black granite is used again to trim the walk ways in the formal garden and provides a stark contrast to the light grey granite used along side it.

Mourne Granite also worked along side the sculptor Bob Sloan to produce the base for the "Remember those who suffer" sculpture which sits at the head of the stream in the Area of Peace. The Memorial Garden is an excellent example of how granite landscaping can be successfully used in contrasting and creative ways.
